Kerry GAA Teams
April 17 2010 Ger McKenna steps down as Central Council Delegate.
Kerry GAA lost 43 years of valuable experience, this week, when Ger McKenna stepped down at Congress as Kerry delegate. Ger had served as Central Council Delegate for just over thirty years. Owing to the five year rule the GAA lost as many as 17 members from The Ard Comhairle at Congress. Ger McKenna was first elected as to Kerry County Board in 1966 as PRO. Not only was he the first PRO in Kerry –he was the first in the Country. He then served as Vice Chairman from 1968 to 1972. During his years involved he saw many changes in the organisation and he was one of the founders of the County Leagues in Kerry. He is an able and talented administrator and a fine orator and will be missed from the County Committee. At a function held last week to honour Ger, Dave Geaney, Teddy O’Sullivan and John McMahon the chairman of the County Committee praised all four for their dedicated service to Kerry GAA. In total they have given 109 years of service to the County and Jerome Conway acknowledged the hard work, time and overall contribution given by all to The Kingdom. Dave Geaney Captained Kerry in 1958 when Kerry won the Munster Championship and was a member of the minor team that defeated Galway in The All Ireland the following year. He played senior football until 1963 and was elected to the County Board as Munster representative in 1973. He was the man in charge of fixtures from 1973 to 1997. Dave and Ger McKenna drew up the first County League campaign and it has gone from strength to strength. He was a County selector when Kerry won The All Ireland in 2008 and still works away quietly with County teams. John McMahon served as Treasurer of Kerry County Board from 1985 to 2008 and Teddy O’Sullivan was first elected as delegate to Munster Council in 1990. Jerome Conway said all four had set very high standards and their input will be missed.
