Girls win14 Championship Final

The Town girls blow away Carryduffs Dream of a Double (match report by Noreen Keown)

The Division A under 14 ladies football championship was held in Saul on Sunday the 11th of October between Carryduff and Castlewellan these two teams had previously met in the league final which had been a keenly contested game with Carryduff narrowly winning this encounter. But from the start Castlewellan poured the pressure on from the midfield duo of Aoife Keown and Saoirse Steele Carryduff had no match for the fast moving passing game of the town girls and found themselves within minutes down 1 goal and 2 points from Aoife Keown 0.1 Anna Rogan 1.0 Aimee McAleenan 0.1 all against a stiff breeze blowing across the pitch The Castlewellan girls continued to pressure the Carryduff Backs with decisive runs from Clare Owens and Anna Rogan both pint sized forwards with so much talent and skill. Carryduff tried to take the game to Town but the Town’s backs had their every move covered and frustrated the Carrduff forwards with constant tackling of the running forwards closing down all their options leaving Carryduff no other option than to kick from narrow angles 1 point resulted from their play but was quickly cancelled out by a goal from Sarah Mc Ardle The Town girls had the bit between their teeth and it seemed that no matter what Carryduff threw at them they just went back up and took their scores at will with Niamb Flannagan making great runs to provide space for midfield to run into. The half time score left Castlewellan 3.5 To Carryduff 0.5 with Anna Rogan having added another goal for the Town. The Carryduff team came out in the second half with more aggression but the Half back line of Paddie Hawkins (C) Ciara Gibson, and Clare Cleland refused to give way and rode out every tackle and attack by Carryduff remaining calm and poised. A penalty was awarded to Carryduff for a foul in the square but this was saved and cleared by the goalie Finola Rice who played a safe sensible game in goals Carryduff were awarded a freak goal for their persistence when a ball came off the Crossbar and hit the covering back Shannon Rice but She responded by sending a long ball to Clare Owens who passed to the centre for Saoirse steele who drove forward and hammered the ball over the bar giving the message to the Carryduff team that they were not there to make up the final but there to take it Carrduff poured more pressure on and two goals resulted from this and brought the game to with 4 points but some great movement by Ciara Gibson and Aoife Keown moved the ball into the Towns Forwards where Castlewellan extended their score to 7 points when Louise McCabe found the net for the town The Town girls continued to play a well organised game with Katie Savage , Shannon Rice and Christine Owens in the full back line completing this team and at the final whistle came out the worthy winners of a bruising encounter 4.8 to 3.5. This was an excellent win for this team as most of this team had just come from a back to back win in the under 16 championship and we would like to wish a speedy recovery to two of our team members who were too sick to play Caoimbe Kelly and Catriona Caldwell
