On Saturday 5th May 2018 at 5pm, Whitewood Rovers soccer team re-formed for an Over-35 challenge match against Electro Celtic in a Jim Condra memorial match. Jim’s first year anniversary is this week and he is sadly missed by all. The match was a huge success and celebrations went long into the night.

Whitewood Rovers started with a strong 11 in a 4-3-3 Klopp-style formation with captain Tommy “The Tommy” Owens leading the line supported on either flank by Raymond Cunningham and Johnny Corrigan. The three in midfield were Phillie Matthews and Paudie Owens on the flanks with Ken Russell in the holding role. The back four were full-backs Damien Cunningham and Emmett Roche while in the centre, the wily pair of Francis Owens and Shane Russell were the “immovable” forces. Big Mick Clarke filled the goals. The game started at a decent pace and Whitewood Rovers repelled a few Electro attacks while creating a few of their own. Electro took the lead after 15 minutes forcing manager Rovers Seanie Loughran to unleash the once-boy-wonder-now-man-mountain Ray “Smoothie” Magee from the bench. Deemed not good enough to start, The Smooth Stuff was quick into his running and levelled the match with a simple enough finish really … just kidding, it was a class finish as always! Chances were traded as halftime approached and the expectant crowd knew that the next score would be vital. The Saturday evening sunshine-drenched mob were gasping for inspiration and when Whitewood Rovers were awarded a free-kick 30 yards out and to the left, the sense of anticipation was palpable.

The cunning free-taker confirmed with the referee that it was indeed direct and placed the ball gently on the grass with the tenderness of an experienced lover. The Whitewood Rovers attackers were lined up on the right-hand-side of the box and the brave and confident free-taker raised a hand and called to them as part of the continuing façade, while with full intentions of using them as decoys. The goalkeeper danced uneasily on his line expecting a long ball to wiped into the on-rushing attackers at the back post. The scene was set … the goalward-glancing free-taker knew what was needed … he addressed the ball Ronaldo-like … ran up Beckham-like … struck it Roberto Carlos-like (only right-footed) …. the ping was beautiful, audible even by the sheep in the next field … the ball started out to the left before evading the two-man wall as it bent right and continuing on its journey … the crowd in unison took a sharp intake of breath … watching the ball rise and rip through the air torpedo-like before rocketing into the top corner with the goalkeeper not sure what had just happened. The crowd were in raptures … kids can tell their grandchildren that they were there on that day … middle-aged men want to be the free-taker … middle-aged women want to be with him … old people can die happy. The ref brought the half to an end with Whitewood Rovers holding a 2-1 lead … the halftime oranges, water, jaffa-cakes, Heineken and fags where never as enjoyable.

The second-half was just as entertaining with Whitewood Rovers unlucky not to extend their lead with a number of cracking efforts. Electro drew level at 2-2 and manager Seanie Loughran unloaded the bench with Matthew Gilsenan, Shane Clarke, Peter Kieran and Noel Clarke all coming for the tiring stars. In a final throw of the dice, Fergal “The Rope” McKenna was unleashed with five minutes to go … and but for his advancing years and waistline he would have grabbed a glorious equalizer from a Jonny “Sweetie” Corrigan cross. The match finished in great spirits and at the after-match presentation Electro Celtic presented the cup they had just won to the Condra family in a gesture that must be acknowledges and was very much appreciated.
