This weekend sees the start of the football championships in Meath and (be jaysus) there’s nothing like the first round a the championship around the county to get d’auld heart racing. All the cold and wet nights in January and February running up and down that feckin’ bank and sprints & shuttles to bate the band … cones, ladders, planks, press-ups, feckin left-hand down, right-hand down, jump … hamstrings, bootstrings, quads and glutes are all pulled and pushed and polished and stretched and ready for battle …. boys off the beer since January and the 35 lads that started training are mostly all still there, compared to the 16 or 18 that’ll be there in August because of injury, sick of training, repeating exams, in the US or making silage … everyone has club socks, togs, training tops, tracksuits, bags, headbands, gumshields and underwear … women are cast aside and told they’ll be looked after during the first two weeks in August … knee straps, ankle straps, hamstring straps, deep-heat, cycling shorts, gloves all neatly arranged into the cleaned club bags … Sunday morning, up good & early to read the papers and get the porridge into ya, with toast and eggs and orange juice … Mass then at about 11am where Father will wish the lads all the best and you look around and get the nod from the auld fellas who will be cheering you on later, or calling you useless if you lose … home for the spuds and then you’re off … into the car, up the road, into the dressroom … clothes off, gear on … come on lads … high-ball, my-ball … smell of the grass … what are we going to do … WIINNN … aaahhhhhhhhh.

Last thing is the championship hair-cut … this really is a thing. You don’t want to go onto the field and score the winning point from 50, 60, 80 yards and look like a tool. You want your hair to be right because when the dude from the Meath Chronicle snaps the picture of you wheeling away to take the plaudits from your adoring crowd, you want to look your best.  Or you might be the third sub and wearing a tracksuit in the team photo, but at least your dreads look good. Sit back, close your eyes, breath in through your nose … aahhh, that’s the smell of the championship … see you Sunday when the ‘Wood take on Dunshaughlin in the first round of the JFC A in Kilberry at (high) noon. Janie-mack, I’m ready to go and its only Monday.

Regards,
Shane Russell & the lotto committee
